Description

DAMP PROBLEM AND SOLUTION

In Nigeria, an estimated 10–50% of the indoor environments where human beings live, work and play are damp. Too much moisture makes a home stuffy and gives it a faint odour. Humid walls create a coldness that makes more heating necessary and increases energy bills.

WHO is concerned about this situation because excessive dampness and mould are a threat to health. Occupants of damp or mouldy buildings are at increased risk of experiencing health problems such as respiratory symptoms, respiratory infections, allergic rhinitis and asthma.

Some people are more sensitive to mould than others, and some groups are especially vulnerable. Additional effort should be made to keep away from damp and mould babies and children, elderly people, those with existing skin problems, such as eczema, or respiratory problems, such as allergies and asthma, and anyone who is immuno-compromised (e.g. Chemotherapy patients).

On the other hand, WHO has demonstrated that remedial action works? For example, research shows that people living in well-insulated and adequately ventilated accommodation are less likely to visit their doctor or be admitted to hospital due to respiratory conditions than those living in damp homes.

This brochure provides practical tips for the public on how to tackle the core problem of excessive moisture (which can take the form of damp air, condensation on surfaces and increased humidity levels in materials) and how to prevent mould growth, as well as on how to clean up mould safely.
Practical tips on getting rid of damp and mould

WHAT IS DAMPNESS?
Dampness is the presence of hygroscopic or gravitational moisture. Dampness gives rise to unhygienic conditions apart from reduction in strength of structural components of the building.

The flooring get loosened because of reduction in the adhesion when moisture enters through the floor.

Timber fittings (such as doors, windows, almirahs) when come in contact with damp walls or floors, gets deteriorated because of warping, buckling, dry rutting etc. of timber.

Dampness in building can be very dangerous if any form of electrical fittings come in contact with it.

Floor coverings are damaged. Therefore no floor coverings should be used on damp floors.

Dampness promotes and accelerates growth of termites.
Dampness breeds germs of dangerous diseases such as tuberculosis, neuralgia, rheumatism etc.

Metal fitting get corroded and rusted due to dampness.

Dampness also causes the following harmful effects:

Dampness is responsible for breeding of mosquitoes and creates unhealthy living conditions.

  • Due to dampness, moisture travel through walls and ceilings and creates unsightly patches and affect the aesthetics of the building. In case of lime plaster, moisture travel causes softening and crumbling of plaster.
  • Dampness in the wall cause efflorescence and sometime dampness is responsible for disintegration of bricks, stones, tiles etc.
  • The wall decoration (like painting) gets damaged due to dampness.

CAN DAMP AND MOULD AFFECT MY HEALTH?
Yes, if you have damp and mould you’re more likely to have respiratory problems, respiratory infections, allergies or asthma. Damp and mould can also affect the immune system.

Who’s affected?
Some people are more sensitive than others, including:

  • babies and children
  • elderly people
  • Those with existing skin problems, such as eczema
  • Those with respiratory problems, such as allergies and asthma
  • Those with a weakened immune system

These people should stay away from damp and mould.

HOW DOES IT AFFECT MY HEALTH

Moulds produce allergens (substances that can cause an allergic reaction), irritants and, sometimes, toxic substances. Inhaling or touching mould spores may cause an allergic reaction, such as sneezing, a runny nose, red eyes and skin rash. Moulds can also cause asthma attacks.

CAUSES OF DAMP AND MOULD
Mould and damp are caused by excess moisture. Moisture in buildings can be caused by leaking pipes, rising damp in basements or ground floors, or rain seeping in because of damage to the roof or around window frames.

A newly-built home may be damp if the water used when building it is still drying out – for example, in the plaster on the walls. Excess moisture indoors can also be caused by condensation.

If you have mould or damp it’s important to find out why you have excess moisture in your home. When you know what’s causing the damp, you can make sure your home is repaired or take steps to limit the moisture in the air. You may need to get a professional to remove mould for you.

How to get rid of Dampness and Mould

Dampness and mould solution is an internal process that must be done by blocking pulses where water is rising which mostly can be from the capillaries.

  • This process by which pulses are been blocked is called injection grouting.
  • Injection grouting is the process of drilling affected areas and capturing capillaries after which our waterproofing materials are injected and left for weeks to cure.
  • The injected chemicals will remove all bacteria’s that may be responsible for all health hazards.
  • This solution is a permanent solution if it is been carried out well.
  • The dampness and mould disappears and a renovation can be carried out if necessary.
